Context

In The Bahamas, marine ecosystems are under increasing pressure due to overfishing, pollution, and climate change. The archipelago is home to 35% of the Caribbean’s coral reefs, which are now threatened. Moreover, ocean literacy levels are low among both students and teachers, and educational resources are limited. To address this, BREEF has implemented the Eco-Schools Programme.

Objectives
  • Raise awareness about the natural and cultural importance of the oceans.
  • Inform about the status of marine resources and their sustainable use.
  • Mobilize youth for marine protected areas and climate action.
  • Improve students’ communication skills on environmental issues.
  • Build teachers’ educational capacities.
Actions
  • Empowering the next generation to protect marine life through initiatives including summer camps.
  • Ocean discovery through educational field trips and snorkeling excursions.
  • First aid training and water safety skills.
  • Environmental journalism workshops through the Young Reporters for the Environment programme.
  • Initiatives for vulnerable youth.
  • Professional development workshops for teachers.

BREEF (Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation) is a Bahamian nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the country’s coral reefs. Through its educational programs, it reaches over 3,500 students each year and raises public awareness about the importance of preserving these vital marine ecosystems.
The foundation also leads hands-on restoration efforts, including a coral garden and nursery, to support the long-term survival of the reefs.
