Context

The Dauphiné Alps landscape continues to face major challenges: habitat fragmentation, overgrazing of public alpine pastures, insufficient protection of large old-growth forests, and sometimes difficult coexistence between wildlife and human activities. Despite the natural return or reintroduction of many species, biodiversity and ecosystem resilience remain fragile in the face of management, water, and climate challenges.

Objectives
  • Create wilder nature through the restoration of natural processes
  • Provide access to wild nature through economic and recreational opportunities
  • Raise awareness and engage people around the impacts of rewilding
  • Develop rewilding as an effective approach to nature restoration and climate change resilience
Actions
  • Forest restoration: Through long-term agreements (conservation easements of over 60 years), creation of reserves, and promotion of closer-to-nature forestry
  • Promotion of natural grazing: Establishment of rewilded horse and bovine herds, in partnership with public and private landowners
  • Targeted reintroductions and wildlife management: For species such as vultures, Alpine ibex, and Eurasian lynx, with feasibility studies and local consultations
  • Creation of local committees: To enhance coexistence with wolves and other predators

Rewilding Europe works to bring back wild nature at scale in Europe in ways that benefit both nature and people. They work to scale up nature recovery across the continent by reintroducing keystone species and removing man-made barriers, allowing natural processes to thrive. Their mission is to demonstrate that a wilder Europe is not only possible but essential for a climate-resilient, healthy, and prosperous society.
