Urban populations are gradually losing direct contact with the surrounding natural world, leading to a growing indifference toward biodiversity and, at times, irresponsible behaviours (such as littering in waterways, various forms of pollution, overconsumption, and animal mistreatment). At the same time, many adults and children are expressing a growing desire to reconnect with the environment and to learn more about local ecosystems and sustainable ways of living.

Objectives

  • Raise awareness and share knowledge about local wildlife and plant life.
  • Provide high-quality information and insights through experienced guides and educators (including biologists and trained naturalists).
  • Offer immersive nature experiences for children and adults in the Geneva region.
  • Develop tailored, hands-on educational activities for schools as a first step toward fostering more conscious and respectful environmental behaviours.

Actions

  • Educational workshops held at the Nature Centre.
  • Year-round excursions to nearby natural sites on a variety of themes.
  • Publication of educational leaflets and a biannual newsletter.
  • Additional nature-related activities: continuing education, intern training, public events, biodiversity surveys, and the creation of forest gardens.

Founded in early 2004 by a group of passionate naturalist biologists, La Libellule is one of Geneva’s leading organizations dedicated to raising awareness about nature—its wildlife, flora, and ecosystems—and promoting environmental conservation. After years of working in the field, its founders created a professional structure to deliver high-quality programs and respond to the growing public interest in nature. Supported by the City of Geneva and the Department of Public Instruction, the association also occasionally contributes to scientific surveys across Switzerland.
